Finding Joy in Alignment – An Introduction to Mind-Body Freedom
Welcome to January, the heart of Summer in Australia! As we step into a new year, it’s the perfect moment to reflect on what truly brings us joy and how aligning with that joy can lead to a life of balance and fulfillment—what I call Mind-Body Freedom.
In yogic philosophy, joy is deeply connected to the Anandamaya Kosha, or the bliss layer—the innermost layer of our being. When we experience joy, we are in alignment with our true self, living in harmony with our purpose, or dharma. This joy isn’t the fleeting happiness from external achievements but the deep, sustained contentment that comes from living in alignment with who we are.
By tuning into this joy, we start to notice how self-care and awareness create more balance in our lives, helping us navigate the ups and downs with greater ease.
If you’re unsure what your dharma might be, start by reflecting on moments when you felt most aligned with your values and energised by what you were doing. Dharma doesn’t have to be grand—it can be found in the small, meaningful ways you show up in the world.

Balancing the Fire Element
In Ayurveda, like attracts like and opposites balance. Summer is associated with the fire element, which governs transformation, passion, and energy. This is a time of vibrancy, warmth, and expansive energy. While the fire element inspires us to take action and embrace change, too much fire can lead to burnout, irritability, and restlessness.
Balancing fire means cultivating cooling, calming practices that keep us grounded and centered amidst the summer heat.
As January is typically the time to make resolutions and plans for the coming year (a typical fire action), remember to plan plenty of self-care strategies. When your calendar is full of your fiery goals, it can leave no ‘white space’ for your downtime. Create awareness around the planning process and ask yourself if you are planning for burnout rather than balance.

Self-Care Tip for Summer
Balance the fire element with cooling and soothing self-care rituals. Here are some simple practices to try:
Hydrate with cooling drinks: Start your day with a glass of room-temperature water infused with cucumber and mint. This helps to cool the body and reduce excess heat.
Spend time in nature: Early morning walks in the cool air can help balance fire and ground your energy.
Mindful rest: Schedule time for mindful pauses during the day, even if it’s just a few minutes of deep breathing or a short meditation.
Breathwork: During the heat of the day or those ‘hot flush’ moments, practice Sheetali pranayama, or “cooling breath.” This involves inhaling through a rolled tongue (or pursed lips if rolling the tongue isn’t possible) and exhaling through the nose. This technique helps cool the body and calm the mind.
Evening grounding practice: In the evening, a gentle grounding practice can help release excess heat and bring calm after a busy day. Try 5 minutes of legs-up-the-wall pose (Viparita Karani) followed by deep belly breathing.
Cooling Through Colour and Clothing
Dress in light, breathable fabrics and choose cooling colors like white, light blue, or green to reduce the effect of heat on your body and mind. Simple lifestyle choices like this can make a big difference in balancing the fire element.
