The Flow of Energy: Awakening the Pranamaya Kosha

As we step into February, we move deeper into the exploration of Mind-Body-Freedom, shifting our focus from Anandamaya Kosha (the bliss body) to Pranamaya Kosha (the energy body).

Pranamaya Kosha is the bridge between the physical and mental layers of self. It governs our vital energy, breath, and the unseen forces that shape our wellbeing. When our energy body is balanced, we feel alive, fluid, and adaptable—able to meet life’s challenges. When it is depleted or stagnant, we may feel exhausted, restless, or disconnected.

One of the most effective ways to restore balance to Pranamaya Kosha is by working with the Water Element, which supports flow, adaptability, and emotional balance.

The Water Element & Your Energy Body

Water represents fluidity, movement, and rhythm. Just as water flows around obstacles, our energy body thrives when we allow movement and breath to work in harmony. When we resist or hold tension—physically or emotionally—our energy becomes blocked, affecting our thoughts, emotions, and overall vitality.

The Water Element invites us to soften, release, and allow life to flow rather than pushing through forcefully. This is especially important during February, when the intensity of summer in Australia can lead to overstimulation, heat, and burnout.

Breath as the Key to Energetic Balance

The Pranamaya Kosha is activated through the breath. The way we breathe influences our nervous system, mental state, and emotional wellbeing. By coordinating movement with breath, we cultivate presence, clarity, and inner stability.

One powerful breathwork practice for balancing Pranamaya Kosha and the Water Element is Bhramari Pranayama (Humming Bee Breath).

Bhramari Pranayama – The Breath of Inner Stillness

This practice soothes the nervous system, calms the mind, and helps regulate emotional waves. The gentle humming vibration stimulates the vagus nerve, which plays a key role in our stress response, digestion, and heart rate regulation.

Try this simple practice:

  • Find a comfortable seated position. Close your eyes and take a few natural breaths.
  • Inhale deeply through your nose.
  • As you exhale, gently close your lips and create a soft humming sound like a bee.
  • Feel the vibration moving through your head, chest, and body.
  • Repeat for 5-7 rounds, noticing how your mind and energy begin to settle.

Movement, Breath & Energy Awareness

The Pranamaya Kosha is most effectively activated when we move in sync with our breath. Flowing practices like gentle vinyasa, tai chi, or even swimming encourage the energy body to remain open and balanced. When you bring awareness to your breath as you move, you invite a state of deep connection between your body, mind, and energy.

Even small moments of awareness—pausing between tasks to take three deep breaths, walking slowly while paying attention to your inhales and exhales, or practicing a few minutes of Bhramari Pranayama before bed—can make a profound difference in your energy levels, emotional balance, and overall vitality.

Koshas & the Interconnected Web of Wellbeing

The koshas are not separate layers—they are deeply interconnected. How we breathe affects our mental state, our emotions, and even our physical health. When we become aware of cause and effect within our own being—how stress impacts our breath, how movement shifts our energy, how breathwork calms the mind—we begin to take control of our own balance and wellbeing.
