When You Get in Your Own Way: Understanding & Transforming Self-Sabotage

We all have moments when we find ourselves stuck – not because of outside obstacles, but because we’re quietly, unconsciously standing in our own way.

And often, it’s not because we don’t want the things we say we desire… but because, deep down, something within us is afraid to receive them.

Have you ever found yourself saying you want something – more time, a new direction, a creative project, better health – only to then do everything in your power to avoid actually receiving it?

You procrastinate.
You get sick.
You burn out just as things start flowing.
You lose momentum. Again.

And then you wonder if you’re just not cut out for the life you say you want.

It’s not because you’re lazy or unmotivated.
It’s called self-sabotage – and it’s far more common than we’re taught to believe.

“Self-sabotage is a deep protective pattern rooted in fear – a way our nervous system tries to keep us ‘safe’ from disappointment, failure, change… or even success.”

Self-sabotage often looks like:
• Procrastination
• People-pleasing
• Perfectionism
• Chronic fatigue or illness
• Emotional numbing

It’s not “bad behaviour” – it’s old belief patterns trying to protect you. It’s what happens when our conscious desires and subconscious beliefs don’t align.

It’s a survival strategy. A part of you wants growth, but a deeper part doesn’t feel safe moving forward. And so, we unconsciously block our own expansion – because your body is wired to seek safety, not change.

One of my clients came to see me because she was feeling depleted and frustrated. She was longing for change but couldn’t seem to build momentum. Each time she made progress, she would get sick or fatigued and end up back at square one.

Through our work together, we uncovered where this pattern was showing up in her life and body. She realised it wasn’t failure – it was fear, disguised as fatigue. As she began to recognise the self-protective beliefs driving her behaviour, her symptoms began to shift. And as her nervous system started to feel safer, she was able to build new habits that supported the life she was calling in. Her body began to trust the process again.

This is the essence of mind-body-freedom.

Transformation isn’t about forcing yourself into change.
It’s about becoming aware of what’s really happening, letting go of the patterns that no longer serve, and creating new rhythms that feel aligned and sustainable.

And no, that doesn’t mean pushing it away or ‘letting go’ on command.
It means creating space for the energy to move – through breath, sound, movement, or stillness.

In my Mind-Body-Freedom method, we move through three key stages:
• Recognise what’s happening beneath the surface – the thoughts, emotions, and patterns shaping your choices.
• Release what no longer serves – the tension in your body, the stories you’ve carried, the habits that keep you stuck.
• Repattern with conscious, aligned action – creating new practices and rhythms that support the life you want.

Lasting transformation doesn’t happen in the mind alone – it begins in the body.
We move. We listen.
We trust the wisdom of the body.

This work is a layered, embodied process that draws on ancient wisdom and modern practices. Healing comes from integration – creating small, aligned changes that help your body and mind feel safe in your expansion. This is where transformation sticks.

Here are some journaling prompts you might find useful:
• What would the version of me who feels clear / strong / calm do differently today?
• What’s one small step I can take to support that feeling?
• What ritual or boundary would protect this shift?

Self-sabotage isn’t weakness – it’s protection. But the illusion of safety can cost us our joy, our health, and the life we’re here to live.

When we tune into the body, ask better questions, and use its wisdom to uncover a deeper truth… we begin to move differently.

You might be surprised what your body reveals when you ask it – instead of overriding it.

You are wise. And your inner patterns can shift – when you’re ready to listen, and move with love and intention.
